The Ocular Research Department at MDRF is dedicated to advancing knowledge and care in diabetic eye diseases. Our work focuses on early detection, innovative treatments, and cutting-edge technologies to prevent vision loss and improve quality of life for people with diabetes.

  • With over two decades of experience in ophthalmology and diabetic eye care, Dr. R. Rajalakshmi plays a pivotal role in advancing ocular research at MDRF
  • Her research expertise includes diabetic retinopathy, retinal imaging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI)–driven diagnostics, and tele-ophthalmology—especially efforts aimed at scalable, cost-effective screening in resource-limited settings
  • A key contributor to the SMART India Study, Dr. Rajalakshmi’s work focuses on predictive modelling and early intervention strategies for diabetic complications across diverse Indian populations
  • She led the world’s first AI-based validation of smartphone fundus photography for diabetic retinopathy detection—a groundbreaking study that has been widely cited
