Department of Healthy Ageing

The Department of Healthy Ageing at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) is a dedicated centre focused on promoting longevity with independence, dignity and quality of life. The department adopts a preventive, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based approach to address the unique health needs of older adults, especially those living with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

Healthy aging is not merely about adding years to life, but about adding vitality to those years. At our specialty clinic, we believe the foundation of longevity is metabolic resilience. We go beyond traditional blood sugar management to proactively preserve your intrinsic capacity—the combined physical (Locomotion, Sensory, Vitality) and mental (Cognition, Psychological) strengths that allow you to remain independent.

The Department of Healthy Ageing is led by Dr. Pradeep Paul, Senior Scientist at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), who brings over 25 years of international experience in population health and evidence synthesis across India, Singapore, and Australia.

As a key investigator in the DiabCog Study—an upcoming landmark multi-centre longitudinal investigation, He contributes to groundbreaking research on the intersection of diabetes and neurodegeneration. This study represents a high-level collaboration between Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, MDRF, the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at IISc Bangalore, and the UK Dementia Research Institute (UKDRI).

Dr. Pradeep also brings a wealth of expertise in global frameworks and clinical assessments, including:

  • Integrated Care (ICOPE): Utilizing the WHO Integrated Care for Older People framework to optimize functional ability in ageing populations.
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA): Integrating research-driven methodologies to evaluate and enhance the physical and cognitive ‘intrinsic capacity’ of older adults.
